Mediaeval Monastic Architecture with tutor Francis Woodman

5 weekly meetings
This short course will have four classes and a visit to a nearby site. The classes will examine the origin of the monasteries, the various orders and their requirements and tastes, the rise of the Friars and the shift in monastic patronage thoughout the period. It will feature the Benedictines and their patronage of Gothic, the austerity of the Cistercians and the spatial experimentation of the friars, not to mention drains and loos!
